The road to the PUBG Nations Cup has been hard fought for Martin “mArtins4n” Castillo and Alejandro Ruben “AleeRv” Velasco, who both played through PUBG Continental Series 6: Americas as part of AKM Gaming. They now fill out half of Team Argentina alongside Nahuel “SzylzEN” Balseiro and Synergy eSports’ Agustin “f1sherr” Encinas.
“I can’t believe it,” mArtins4n wrote on Twitter after learning he had been selected for the PUBG Nations Cup. “Thailand, [I’ll] see you there!”
AKM Gaming finished 4th in the Latin America Regional Playoff for PCS6: Americas behind their colleagues in Brazil. The team started the tournament off with a bang, earning 35 kills and 23 placement points. They finished second to only the Young Kings during the first week of play. MArtins4n and squad fell off during the second week, but still earned enough to earn a position in the PCS6: Americas Grand Final.
Only six of the twenty three teams competing in the Latin America Regional Playoff had Argentinian players on their squads – and several squads only had one or two – but AKM Gaming went all the way and proved there is plenty of talent packed between Patagonia and Buenos Aires.
F1sherr fell short at the Last Chance Qualifier, although he did help his team earn 38 kills during a 12 match stretch. SzylzEN hasn’t competed much in 2022, but was present for the first PUBG Nations Cup in 2019 where he helped Team Argentina land 9th place among stiff competition.
SzylzEN’s leadership, combined with the hot barrels of mArtins4n and AleeRv, could help Argentina find similar success in Bangkok.
The PUBG Nations Cup is a different type of tournament. MArtins4n and company won’t be facing off against the same squads they did in PCS6. If they can keep to their classic strategy of aggression, and get plenty of practice in order to build synergy before the big weekend, then Argentina stands a real chance at surprising the PUBG community.
Argentina ran in the middle of the pack during the PUBG Nations Cup in 2019. They only landed within the Top 5 three times and most of their kills came toward the end of the tournament. Argentina will need to try a different strategy and hopefully SzylzEN will have learned a thing or two in the three years since that fabled trip to Seoul.
Catch Team Argentina and the remaining fifteen teams at the PUBG Nations Cup from June 16th to 19th at the TRUE ICON HALL ICONSIAM in Bangkok, Thailand. You can catch all the action on YouTube and Twitch.
